Process Statement

In the Spring of 2022, Graphic Designers from the graduating class were put into a competition to create branding material for the Tennessee Tech Bacchanal. The Tennessee Tech Bacchanal is a Celebration of Art, Wine, and Food. The school asks students to create art in their medium if the student received a bacchanal scholarship. Those works get auctioned off, and all money spent at the Bacchanal goes to the scholarship. For the branding, I wanted to encompass Tennessee and all the different mediums the school offers students. These are Art Education, Clay, Digital Design, Fibers, Glass, Metals, Painting, and Wood. I combined all these mediums into an icon set. While working on my icons I thought about what color pallet would work best for the event. Since the Bacchanal happens in late October, I decided to do a warmer palette that emphasizes the beauty of the leaves in a Tennessee Fall. The next task was finding the correct typeface. Since Tennessee has so many Art Deco influences I decided the typeface should also have an Art Deco feel. That's why I chose Canela Deck and Baron Neue; Baron Neue has the bold, extravagant, and decorative elements that so many fonts had in the 20s and 30s.
